Online Essay

My online essay couldn't be posted as my blog refused to allow it and kept saying "Your HTML cannot be accepted: Tag is not allowed: META" I brought the blog back to the basics in a word document and it still did not let me submit my assignment. So I sent an email to Josh Nicholas with the assignment attached and explaining my reasons. Therefore, my assignment will most likely to be emailed to my tutor, Laura, from me as soon as I get her email address.

Overview of this Course =)

I can honestly say in this overview of this course that it has a slightly different approach and way of learning and dealing with assignments.

Within the lecture, there was only a short amount of time for the tutors to deliver all the information we needed to learn for this course. I found that I learnt many new things in this short period of time and some things I learnt were fascinating or sometimes boring.
The tutors also didn't go too in depth within their theory work and they gave excellent samples to help students understand the concept of the lecture if they didn't get it. They used samples from movies, TV shows etc. The topics we learnt in each lecture was usually something I never heard of and this is what I found fascinating; learning something completely new within the lectures. Though, the topics of lecture slowly began moving towards the ideas with technology, cyberpunk and science fiction. This is where I kinda lost interest and found it difficult to understand some of the terms used.

The tutorials were really fun and I found that I could get alot of work and get help within that one tutorial. This is something I like. I like getting my work done and having help if I need it and the tutor was lovely and a great assistance. Especially helping out with any assignment or tut*spark questions. The assignments for this course was sometimes easy and then sometimes hard. For our assignments, we had to find information about things we didn't know which were hard but it helped me rely on other search engines to help research on the project. One thing I found differently about this course from other ones within the assignment area is we hand in blogs instead of regular papers, which is good for the environment of course. But I found cool even though I have a major dislike towards blogs.

Overall, I found this course pretty good and I enjoyed it as I learnt new things within technology, the history of the evolution of technology, cyberpunk etc. The one thing I think that would be better is having more hands-on and group work activities as it helps the students share ideas and talk about the lectures so everyone can understand what was said if any confusion arrived. Nevertheless, this blog evaluates the course overall.

Week 9 of New Com Tech (Tutorial Task)

For this week's tutorial task, we have to talk about our chosen essay topic, our thoughts on this particular topic and where we can begin searching for it.

I have decided to choose the topic of discussing the impact of two figures in history have effective the development of digital technologies and digital culture. The two figures I have chosen is Ada Lovelace, who is known as the world's first computer programmer and Ray Kurzweil, who is a well-known American author, inventor and futurist.

My thoughts on this topic is that I find it interesting looking back into history of how what we have today has come to be such as the development of the technology we have especially within music. Though, the two figures I haven chosen are unrelated to the development of technology within music. They both still have majorly effecting today's technology.

Within researching area for this assignment, I can start by learning the auto-biography for each of the two figures and what we're their major achievement and how it effected technology today. Also, I can find out what inspired them or who and how they inspiration effected their work.

=)

Week 9 of New Comm Tech (Lecture)

In our week 9 lecture, we learnt about the meaning and understanding of cyberpunk and the writer, William Gibson. Cyberpunk is the opposite to a fairytale scene, it has more of a gritty aesthetic and shows the shadows, decay, lust (as there is no love in cyberpunk; only lust) and capital of the scene. It also incorporates ideas that involve high technology such as human fused to machine etc. Furthermore, it also questions morality in the areas of opportunism, theft and murder.

Cyberpunk is based in the hybrid genre which includes hard-boiled detective fiction, film noir, science fictions and literary postmodernism. Hard-boiled detective fiction includes the topics anti-hero protagonists, crime, betrayal etc. Film noir is the lust, money, power, seduction, murder etc. Science fiction shows a world saturated by technology or post-apocalyptic or apocalypse never came or a giant anonymous multinational corporations. Lastly, literary postmodernism is a way of showing the story in short fragments or in quick descriptions.

In cyberpunk, there are many authors such as Bruce Sterling, Neal Stephenson, John Shirley, Lewis Shiner, Rudy Rucker. One of the most famous cyberpunk writers is William Gibson. He was born on the 17th of March, 1948, in Conway, South Carolina, USA. He grew up in Wytheville, Virginia and then moved to Toronto, Canada later on in life. By 1977, he received his Bachelor of English from University of British Columbia. Over time, he was written many brilliant trilogies such as Sprawl (which includes the books Neuromancer, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive), Bridge (which includes Virtual Light, Idoru and All Tomorrow's Parties) and Blue Ant trilogy (which includes Pattern Recognition, Spook Country and Zero History.)

Overtime, cyberpunk has become a lingua franca of digital culture. It has a huge impact on imagining human - and - machine interconnections and fusions. (Hopefully, a feature will include creating music inside your head and recording it onto a chip that can be transferred to a computer and then posted to the world, HOW COOL WOULD THAT BE!!! )

Week 8 of New Com Tech (Tutorial Task)

For this week's tutorial we are to write or re-write an article relating to a form of
cyberpunk. The category I have chosen is the "fusion of man and machine." Many movies have put forward this kind of movement in technology with movies such as I Robot, Terminator etc. A current news story that can relate back to this form of evolving technology is with the addiction of the game, Sims. The article has been inserted below.

EA Denies "Sims Addiction"- Lies to Congress – Ignores the Evolution of Man and Machine becoming one.

REDWOOD CITY, CA- Since its launch in November, The Sims Online has shot straight to the top of the top seller lists, leaving a trail of broken families and shattered lives in its path. The game where players control a number of virtual humans has ensnared thousands of real people in its mind-numbing web. All the while Electronic Arts, the game's maker, continues to maintain that the ceaseless, pixel-pushing drudgery of The Sims Online is nothing more than a fun escape from the very real drudgery of everyday life. Still, the Federal Trade Commission is looking into allegations that the game is "dangerous and addictive," and several consumer advocates have called for the title to be banned. Furthermore, the Sims games shows how technology is slowly moving towards the idea of man and machine coming together either in virtual or real reality. This movement will be the start of a massive addication that will greatly effect society and EA continues to ignore this fact and instead, they encourage it.

Last month Electronic Arts CEO Larry Probst testified before a Congressional committee that The Sims is not addictive and it doesn’t influence the thought of virtual reality and the becoming of what technology maybe and that such a notion is, in his words "dunder-headed." However, the story didn't end there. Last week, a leaked memo from deep within EA indicated that the company has known for years just how addictive the game really is and that it actually designed The Sims Online to enhance the addictive and influential nature of their product. Once this came to light, EA executives were again called before Congress and threatened with purgery charges. Probst denied that The Sims Online is habit-forming and then went on to deny his previous testimony. Committee members reminded the executive that we was under oath and not to be so defensive.

"I wouldn't characterize my statements as defensive, Mr. Congressman," Probst told the committee. "With all due respect, I submit that your behavior has been more than a little antagonistic."

As this debate over the addication of this virtual games rages on, the effects of the disorder can be seen everywhere. Some at the Centers for Disease Control are seriously thinking of classifying it as an epidemic. Todd Harpum, a counselor at an area behavioral rehabilitation center, says he has seen over a hundred patients in the past month, all suffering from this same addiction. "We had a similar event during the Tetris outbreak of the late 80's. This looks several times worse."

Though some may dismiss it, this addiction is as real as any other physical dependency. But this kind of addiction isn’t just about a “fun escape from the everyday lifestyle,” it is also pushing boundaries and technology into evoloving the ways of technology ruling our human lives. This can be related to the movie, Surrogates. This is movie is set in the future where humans control and interact through their surrogate robots. It puts forward an idea of safety of living and controling their robots in their perfect society. However, trouble comes knocking on there door when murders of surrogates start appearing in this faultless environment.

A trailer of the movie is below:

This movie shows what the technology could become. Man and machine becoming one and this addiction through the Sims Online game can be the starting point of this masked reality. A perfect and safe society can only last so long before it becomes unreal. Sims is that type of game. A virtual game that will never jump out from the computer screen, but the addictors tell a different story. Their own lives become slowly affected and taken over by their addiction.

The addictors start with periods of lost time and obsessive behaviors associated with problem Simming can affect work, home, and family life. Health experts point to statistics for the period immediately following the online game's release and predict a baby bust in the fall of 2003 owing to the fact that so many people have lost their interest in interaction with fleshy humans in favor of pixel-based ones. In short, people have stopped having sex.

"The issue of whether EA lied to Congress about Sims Addiction is nothing more than a distraction," argues consumer advocate Ralph Nader. "What we really need is a way to help people quit."

Quitting or decreasing the number of people addicated to this game would be better for society, but EA will try to win them back with newer and better products. However, several companies have offered to manufacture dongle devices to automatically quit the game after a predetermined amount of time: first three hours, then two, then one. Proponents of the system say that within a few weeks, a player could become completely free of Sims cravings.

Unfortunately, several Sims addicts in the test group simply went out and bought new computers. As if that weren't enough, Electronic Arts claimed that the after-market products violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and had the dongle makers hanged.

On Monday, GlaxoSmithKilne announced that a Sims cessation aid is in the pipeline and should be on store shelves by the fall. The product, which will likely come in the form of a skin-adhesive patch, will slowly release a feeling of belonging and God-like power throughout the day. However, officials at the FDA are concerned that the patch itself may become far more dangerous and addictive than the game itself. Cause a patch making you feel powerful will be so much better than living and becoming addicted to a virutal reality game, right?

The choice is up to you really, but society should be cautious in the steps they take with the evolution of the technology that they will or will be creating.

The article reflects on this issue greatly. My own editing is written in purple and the original article can be found through this website: http://www.ridiculopathy.com/news_detail.php?id=742

Week 8 of New Com Tech (Lecture/Tut Spark)

During this week's lecture, we learnt about cyberpunk and how it has relations to society. Cyberpunk was created around 1983 through the Sprawl trilogy by Bruce Bethke. In the book, it had features of advanced science, such as information technology and cybernetics, which also included a breakdown in the social order. Cyberpunk started off as a novel genre but it has slowly pushed its way into society through films, television shows, manga and anime, games, music and literature. Features in cyberpunk usually include things like a electronic based society, futuristic gadgets and gizmos, is set in the near-future etc.

A film that can be related back to the cyberpunk genre is "Blade Runner." The movie is set in 2019 in a oppression future which is being manufactured by beings called 'replicants.' They are slaves used on space colonies and are legal prey on Earth to various bounty hunters who kill them. The overall tone of the film set a trend for many other cyberpunk movies such as "The Matrix," which uses a wide variety of cyberpunk elements. But these two films are only two of the many cyberpunk based films created so far today.

Cyberpunk has become a part of today's society through entertainment and is beginning to become a social impact. =)

Week 7 of New Com Tech (Lecture)

07/09/10
During this week's lecture, we learnt about free culture, free society, libre open source software and creative commons. Though, we mostly talk about creative commons and the copyrights the business has differently to other copyright companies. Creative Commons is different as it allows some rights and is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting reasonable copyright.

We also given a task to complete in our lecture, which was finding a free software and using it for 10 days. The free software that I will be using is Photoscape 3.5 This is a free software application. It is an excellent photo editing tool that includes tools such as edit, print, optimize, view and having fun with all your photos, all for free. But this is just a reading overview of the program. So in 10 days, I will update the end of this blog with details of what I think of this software. =)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
17/09/10
Alrighty, it's been ten days since I started using the software, Photoscape 3.5 which is similar to Adobe Photoshop. I think the program is actually quite good, I mean it's not as well-known and popular as Adobe but it still supplies the basic qualities of a photoshop program such as cropping, editing, re-sizing etc. My review is positive. I like it and I'm gonna keep it =)

Week 7 of New Com Tech (Tutorial)

For this week's tut spark, we get to....drum roll please!!!! ANSWER MORE QUESTIONS!!! YAY!

1. What is creative commons and how could this licensing framework be relevant to your own experience at university?

Creative Commons is an international business that provides free licenses and tools that allows copyright users to openly share their material with others who can share, reuse and remix the users material, legally. Creative Commons licensing framework would be relevant to university students as this type of licensing can allow students to choose particular options that do with their own personal work. I believe this is positive thing and it would influence more people to join.

2. Find 3 examples of works created by creative commons and embed them in your blog.

The first example of work created by someone who has a license with creative commons is Laura Burlton with her photo, Blackboard Buys Angel.

The second example I found was project posted on Wikimedia Commons. This project is fully licensed under Creative Commons rules.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ultratieftöner-Skulptur_Hoge_Veluwe.jpg

The last example I found was a photo of a sculpture by Hoger Doelle.

3. Find an academic article which discusses creative commons using a database or online journal. Provide a link to and a summary of the article.

In summary of this article, it talks about how music industry is beginning to struggle with the effects of the Internet sales and downloads, even with the use of copyrights. In the article, it examines Creative Commons movement and how it would be more beneficially for musicians everywhere.

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan05/articles/creative.htm

4. Have a look at Portable Apps (a pc based application) – provide a brief description of what it is and how you think this is useful.

One of the portable apps that is well known is the Sudoku portable game. This game is is logically game with placing numbers on a 9x9 grid. The objective is to completely fill in the grid with numbers 1 - 9 without repeating any in each column or row. I believe that this game is useful as it gets the brain working and you have to think outside the box. =)

Week 6 of New Comm Tech (Lecture)

This week in New Communication Technologies, we went more depth about technology, the Internet and types of media. We learnt that technology is the scientific study of mechanical arts and how they use their applications within the world.

The Internet, well web 2.0, is mostly a technical definition in describing key technologies to do with the creation of web services. Web 2.0 has features such as folksnomy (organising knowledge eg. tags), the idea of user-generated content (eg. people creating photos, videos and texts) and open API (means sharing data openly between services on the Internet).

The types of media we learnt about were new media and social media. New Media has a relation to a virtual community and individual identity. Virtual community is a way to explain a group of people who communicate via the Internet. The individual identity is a way of explaining how people express who they are through the Internet eg. profiles, profile song etc.

Social media, on the other hand, deals with blogs and other social categories. These types of blogs can vary to vlogs, moblogs, microblog. It also handles the social network services which are friendster, myspace, facebook etc. Lastly, social media also has a relation to content sharing communities which is flicker, youtube etc. =)

Week 5 of New Comm Tech (Tutorial)

For this week's tutorial task, we have to make a film of a some kind that has a relation to a culture jam that was our own original idea. My group came up with the idea of a girl called Jessica Blaas being killed by a crocodile in Main Beach. In the report, we say why the crocodiles were further south and this was because of global warming.

This video was filmed at Main Beach and Project Room in the university. Filming and editing of the movie didn't take too long and wasn't particularly hard. On a further note, I had fun creating this project and faking a attack =)

Week 5 of New Comm Tech (Lecture)

For this week's wonderful lecture objective is.....answering more questions!!!!! YEAH.... This is so awesome, can we relate to music please??? That would be lovely =)

Anyway, first question! What is considered the first Culture Jam?

Well, from the information I gathered from the wonderful source of wikipedia LOL Wiki says that culture jamming can be traced back to the 1950s. One of the first particular influential active groups in Europe were called the Situationists and was led by Guy Debord. Their main argument was based on the past idea of how humans dealt with life and consumer market directly. They argued that spontaneously living was slowly disappearing because of the new modern way of life. This culture jam saw everything from television to radio as a threat to their cause. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_jamming#cite_note-Lasn-2)

Second question, Who is the most influential Jam?

From my own point of view and musically, I think Gorillaz can be considered as one of the most influential culture jams. With the audience they have gained through their music, they have opened a culture jam called the "Reject False Icons." This phrase was formed a short time before their short album was released. According to the guitarist, Noodle, he states " Reject False Icons means many things. Think for yourself is one of them."

This phrase expanded into "Respect false icons, reject false icons." This phrase was also created to show people to appreciate things such as music and media, but not idolize them as they would with God or religion. But ma
ny Gorillaz fans thought the phrase represent to descrive any "poser" artist or ones they do not like as a false icon and continue to worship Gorillaz, thus destroying the whole meaning of the phrase. The Gorillaz promoted their Reject False Icons campaign with their video, Rock It. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorillaz) (http://gorillaz.wetpaint.com/thread/1107630/REJECT+FALSE+ICONS)

Third question, Who is the most damaging Jam?

This advertise is probably a good example of bad culture jamming and bad placement of advertising. In my opinion, this is a bad influence and an awaking to the public in a way. Childhood obesity shouldn't be taken lightly and parents should take better care of their children instead of allowing them Mcdonalds for a "healthy and fulfilling" meal which would up their chance in getting obesity in their life. If parents wish to feed their children Mcdonalds then fine but as long as the children are granted enough exercise to burn off the processed fat and food. This is same for teenagers.

Week 4 of New Comm Tech (Tutorial)

For this weeks, tutorial exercise we had to question the following questions below =)

1.Where and when did usable online video start? (provide some refs. and an example if possible)

Online video use began around 2005 - 2006 when the spread of Internet becoming easily to access globally. Since then online video clips have become very popular. By 2006, there was tens of millions of video clips available online as new websites began springing up focusing on purely on offering free video clips to users and many of those particular sites established and corporate sites by adding video clips to their own sites.

It was also then when individual sites began creating online vlogs for the public. Youtube was not the first online video website, it was just easy to work. Youtube was created in 2006 and is growing more and more popular every day. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_videos)

2.In the lecture we heard about technological innovations that were used by the studios to lure audiences. (mostly to combat the popularity of TV)
What recent innovations are being used to lure us in the movies?
What are they luring us from?

Some recent innovations that try to lure people into going to the cinema is effects such 3D and 4D viewing of the movie. They are also making bigger screens in particular cinemas such IMAX to make the movie more effective. Furthermore, in some cinema places they place effects on the seats so that they will vibrate or shock you when the movie becomes action filled. But these are some of things business do to lure us in.

But in luring us in it lures us away from simply things that probably everyone does. One of the things we get lured out from is downloading, which I'm sure most people do instead of spending our money on watching the movie at the cinemas. Also, it influences us to go out more instead of staying home and probably on facebook or the couch watching TV. But in luring us into going out, we can socialize face to face instead texting or calling or basically relying on technology to catch up with people.

3.Are short films still being made? Why? Who pays for them to be made?

Short films are still being made in today's industry. Short films have expanded to advertisements and including the music industry within the video clips for the release of singles of artist's songs. But other than that area of the world, short films are becoming popular with college/university students and within the independent film industries. Also, some major companies are producing short films along with their major films such as Blur Studio and Disney.

4.The term viral is thrown about adhoc but what does it mean in film/movie arena? Give some examples.

The term, viral, means caused by virus or spreading by word of mouth. This term can mean in the film/movie industry that certain products or advertises can be spread really quickly through the use of technology, it can spread like a virus. An example of this would be Old Spice, CoverGirl, Pringles etc. CoverGirl is one of the industries that sky-rocketed and became a worldwide sensation within the cosmetic industry. Pringles is widely sold throughout many countries such as the US, UK, Australia, Canada etc.

5. Online video distribution isn't limited to the short film format. We are now starting to see television styled shows made solely for internet release (webisodes). Find an example of this style of content and discuss how viewing television content in this way can positively and negatively affect the viewer's experience.

In today's society, there are now video shows/ online blogs throughout the internet. A online entertaining TV show that is example of this is the "What The Buck Show" on youtube. The show is more based on the gossip and making fun of celebrities but still entertaining for many viewers. This content can be seen positively for the viewer and the blogger as there is more a vast audience and it can be convenient to the public. Negatively, this type of public content being shown can influence and be easily accessed by younger teenagers and kids. Furthermore, if anything is said wrong or is abusive, it can be deleted off the net.

http://www.youtube.com/user/WHATTHEBUCKSHOW

Week 4 of New Comm Tech (Lecture)

In this week's lecture task we had to find three short films over the net. The first short film I found was:

This short film fascinated me as I always like a good cartoon short film cause it reminds me of the old days of Cartoon Network with shows such powerpuff girls, tom and jerry, the jetsons, the flintstones etc. Furthermore, the title captured me attention as it was called "Elephant Dream" and I wanted to find out what the film was about.

The second short movie I found was:

Again, I know with the cartoons! But there are so funny =) And quite creative. Plus, I think you can tell I'm into childish things thats why I like cartoons like these that are made by Disney, Pixar, Blur Studio etc. Those are the reasons I choose this short film.

The third short film I choose was:

This short film I found particular cool. Especially with the two screens in one and how the day can be planned out different through the course of time and actions we do. This short film shows a good example of this. =)

Week 3 of New Comm Tech (Tutorial)

The objective for this week's tut*sparks is to answer the following questions with photos and links. Fun-ness!

1. What is the weight of the world’s biggest machine? H
ow much did it cost to build?

The world's largest digging machine machine weighs 45,500 tons. It took five years to design it and it is at a cost of around 100 million dollars. The machine is 95 meters high and 215 meters long. (http://www.swapmeetdave.com/Humor/Workshop/Trencher.htm)

2. What is the best way (quickest, most reliable) to contact Ozzy Osborne?

The best way to contact Ozzy Osbourne would be to have his agent or manager's contact number or email address or home address. However, there are several sites that try to spam people into believing their information on their fake site. The sites sometimes also make you spend money or have your contact your details and send you spam mail. But this is all based on my personal opinion and the knowledge I have on the music industry.

3. When and what was the first example of global digital communication?

The first sample of global digital communication was in December, 1979. This was when the first phone system was sold to the network. One year later in February, the first phone system was installed at Danville Family Practice. This was only the beginning of global communication. (http://www.digcom.com/digihist.htm)

4. What is the cheapest form of travel from the Gold Coast to Melbourne?

The cheapest form of travel from the Gold Coast to Melbourne would most likely be on a plane. For example, with virgin blue flights, it can cost up to 88.00 dollars to catch a (economy) direct flight to Melbourne.
(http://www.zuji.com.au/site/travel/flights/transport-results.html?skin=enau.zuji.com.au&mondial_auto=true&DPSRT=FA&DPNOC=0&DPNOA=1&DPNOI=0&DPLOC=en_AU&DPNOS=0&DPHSI=0&date_in_month=8&DPXCP=F&DPFSI=0&DPCID=0&DPXAL=F&DPTRT=flights&DPSFT=&DPXTR=F&DPTTT=O&DPBFT=False&DPXCH=T&DPXMG=F&DPHEI=7&failureURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.zuji.com.au%2Fsite%2Ftravel%2Fflights%2Fflights-search-error.html&DPDAP=OOL&DPBFE=False&DPXIN=T&DPCLS=Y&DPPID=5005&date_out_month=8&DPFEI=9&TRANS=ViewTransportationSearchBox%2CdoSearchForTransportation&DPSAC=Z03&date_out_day=24&DPDCC=AUD&DPIDT=0001&DP1WF=1&DPFIT=&DPODT=0001&DPAAP=MEL&DPAIR=NONE&date_in_day=31&DPDIR=

5. Who is Hatsune Miku? What company does she belong to? What is her birthday?

Hatsune Miku is one of the first characters installed into a program called the Vocaloid Character Vocal Series. This program is unique as it is tuned to create J-pop songs heard in anime and no other genres can be created this way. The company Hatsune Miku belongs to is Yamaha Corporation. Her birth date is the 31st of August. (http://myanimelist.net/character/7156/Miku_Hatsune) (http://www.vocaloid.com/index.en.html)

6. Find a live webcam in Antarctica. Find a place to stay in Antarctica.

Isolated and cold Anatartica may be but you can still find tip-top place to stay. One of the places you can stay is at the Polish Antarctic Station Arctowski. This place includes airport pick-up, gym, bar and many other fine hotel qualities. (http://www.geckogo.com/Lodging/Antarctica/South-Shetland-Islands/Polish-Antarctic-Station-Arctowski/)

A live webcam is placed at the Scott Base. The camera has been placed in the Hillary Field Centre briefing room with White Island in the distance. (http://www.antarcticanz.govt.nz/scott-base/webcams)

7. What song was in top of the Australian pop char
ts this week in 1980?

The top two songs in the Australian pop charts during this week in the 1980s was "Alone Again" by The Shamen and "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles. (http://australian-charts.com/forum.asp?todo=viewthread&id=30648)

8. How would you define the term 'nano technology'? In your own words, what does it really mean?

In my own words I would define nano technology as a matter of controlling a small atom or molecular. Furthermore, it would involve developing materials within that smaller size. (http://www.zyvex.com/nano/)

9. What type of camera is used to make ‘Google Street View’?

The camera used to make Google's Street View has a 360 degree image taking projection. The camera is used by Immersive Media for Google's Street View. (http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-9724604-1.html)

Well, that last question was weird and it was kind of difficult not using google or wiki to research and find answers for each question. But I tried at least and thats what I'm glad about. I don't really care if they wrong or right. I tried at least =)

Week 3 of New Comm Tech (Lecture)

Righto, in this week's lecture. We learnt some history on the computer and the internet. We also learning how to define analog and digital technology. To me, I would define it as a way we listen or see and it has some value. Furthermore, we also learnt the difference between the "then" and "now" technology. Looking back into the music transformation with technology, there have been quite a few leaps and bumps but in the end, inventor back then succeeded in building their work.

We also got ask to include in our blog about three devices that are digital devices but are not electronic. Totally makes sense right? But let t
he research begin.

1. The first digital device I found was the Tinkertoy computer. It is purely made out of tinkertoys, a brick, a piece of string and a sharpened pencil. It was built by MIT students around 1975. (http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~cfs/472_html/Int
ro/TinkertoyComputer/TinkerToy.html)

2. The second device I found is inexpensive controllers which can be found in some washing machines. Inexpensive controllers use mechanical logic and can be created manually and be eco-friendly. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_electronics#Non-electronic_logic)

3. The third device would be the hydraulic press. This device is based on Pascal's principle which is when fluid completely fills an object and a pressure is a applied to the object at any part of its surface. The pressure is then transmitted equally throughout the whole of the enclosed fluid. The hydraulic press includes a cylinder, piston of large diameter, pipe, forcepump, valve and a tank. Week 2 of New Comm Tech (Tutorial)

The tutorial, this week was actually fun. Even though, half the time I was with my group running campus taking photos. It was still fun. Our job in this weeks tutorial was to create a slideshow with 30 pictures based on storyline or subject. My groups subject was "The Late Assignment."

Brainstorming was the first thing we did. We though of ideas that would affect an assignment becoming late such as missing the bus, getting the assignment wet, computer breaking down etc. Our actress was quite funny creating this character. She had great facially expressions.

But technology failed us near the end of the lesson. When we went to upload the photos onto the computer. The computer didn't seem to like our phones and didn't connect properly to two of the phones in our group. In the end, as I had all the photos on my phone, I had to bluetooth them. One by one, to other member in our group and then upload them, one by one as well. It took time to get them on the computer. But that shows you shouldn't entirely rely on technology.

This is our video called the Late Assignment.

Technology finally pulled through in the next tutorial and we finally posted our video. We made it short, sweet and quite funny with the use of facial expressions. In the last moments working on the video, we edited a few photos, added music and played around with a few effects. =)

Week 2 of New Comm Tech (Lecture)

This week in the lecture for new communication technologies, we learnt about cine-speaking. This is learning about the language of cinema. Included in this lesson, we also learnt about different shots and angles, such as wide shot, long shot, medium long shot, mid shot, medium close-up, close-up, big close-up and extreme close-up.

Shots can represent words as well as contribute to the factors of who, what, when, where, why and how within the film. But each factor can be shown only through particular shots. For example, who can be brought forth through a close-up shot and where can be shown through a long shot as it would establish the scene. This was basically our lecture this week.

Week 1 of New Com & Tech (Summary of this week)

I have five new things to say in this blog:

(1) New Communication Technology did a short history on the evolution of technology in the first lecture. But, they didn't include the musically changes in technology throughout the ages. How forgetful! Music plays one huge part of society's technology in recording studios, ipods, cds, instruments and music productions. How can you forget that?

(2) I learnt something new today. Setting up a blog. The joy!

(3) I found some awesome music blogs throughout the web, which is quite cool cause you can check out the latest music information and production. I also checked out myspace as most artists create their own blog on their myspace. So that was pretty cool so far =)

(4) In yesterday's lecture, I learnt several new meanings on the terms, 'Communication' and 'Technology.' Several other students had really good examples and definitions on both of the terms.

(5) I dislike blogs, even more than that I have one. But it helps me pass university, then so be it.

=)

Week 1 of New Com & Tech (The Lecture)

Hi, I'm Sarah.

I'm 17 and a half. I have great friends and family. I'm learning guitar and piano. I feel at ease within the music element and I write lyrics WAY too much. It's like a constant flow in my brain. It gets annoying but I wouldn't change it.

Life is short so I'm inspiring myself to do something great in my life that I can actually look back and smile at the memories. But right now, I'm just taking the baby steps of my life by beginning at university and trying to channel as much of my musical thoughts and lyrics through each of my subjects/assignments.
