Week 6 of New Comm Tech (Lecture)

This week in New Communication Technologies, we went more depth about technology, the Internet and types of media. We learnt that technology is the scientific study of mechanical arts and how they use their applications within the world.

The Internet, well web 2.0, is mostly a technical definition in describing key technologies to do with the creation of web services. Web 2.0 has features such as folksnomy (organising knowledge eg. tags), the idea of user-generated content (eg. people creating photos, videos and texts) and open API (means sharing data openly between services on the Internet).

The types of media we learnt about were new media and social media. New Media has a relation to a virtual community and individual identity. Virtual community is a way to explain a group of people who communicate via the Internet. The individual identity is a way of explaining how people express who they are through the Internet eg. profiles, profile song etc.

Social media, on the other hand, deals with blogs and other social categories. These types of blogs can vary to vlogs, moblogs, microblog. It also handles the social network services which are friendster, myspace, facebook etc. Lastly, social media also has a relation to content sharing communities which is flicker, youtube etc. =)
